The parable of the falling beam

I found a link to an interesting extract from The Maltese Falcon in the blog comments on Naked Capitalism. A nice illustration of how a brush with the true uncertainty of life can change your outlook.

By the time he had eaten his luncheon he had found his means of adjustment. Life could be ended for him at random by a falling beam: he would change his life at random by simply going away.
